As the world starts to open up once again craft beer lovers will undoubtedly be heading to their favorite breweries and pubs. If that includes you, what better time to let your adventurous nature shine through by trying new beers. One of the best ways to do that is to order a beer flight. The team at Cheers All explains some important Dos and Dont's of enjoying a craft beer flight.
Beer Flight Dos and Dont's
If you are new to exploring craft beers, you may also be new to the concept of “flights.” A beer flight involves an assortment of sample size glasses of craft beers that typically arrive on a custom made wooden “paddle.” To make sure you do not feel like a novice when ordering and enjoying your craft beer flight, consider the following dos and don’ts:
Do Consult the Staff When Ordering. Breweries, tasting rooms, and even pubs that offers flights have usually put some serious thought into the flights they offer. One flight might highlight the range of beers they offer while another might focus on a specific style of beer. They may even offer you the option to create your own flight. Instead of ordering blindly from the menu, consult the staff to get the most out of your craft beer flight experience.
Don’t Chug Your Beer. It might not come naturally to you if you are a true beer drinker but try to avoid chugging your beer flights. Think of a beer flight as akin to a wine tasting – the idea is to savor the taste and aroma of each beer. If you find one that really resonates with you, order a full glass after you finish your flight and feel free to chug away at that point!
Do Drink in the Order Presented. Your flight of beer will likely be presented to you on a wooden board known as a “paddle” or on some other creative display board. The display board is not just for looks. The order in which the mini brewskis are presented on the board is intentional. Instead of just grabbing the one that speaks to you first, taste the beers in the correct order – left to right. Most likely the flight will be arranged from the lightest to the darkest beer because the lighter the color the lighter the flavor (usually). Drinking the lightest beer first, therefore, ensures that the darker beers will not overpower the taste of the lighter beers.
Don’t Avoid a Beer Because of Preconceived Notions. Most of us already have a favorite beer and/or preferred style of beer. You might be a devoted pale ale drinker or a diehard porter aficionado. When presented with a flight of craft beers you might be tempted to avoid beers that appear to be far outside your preferred style. Keep in mind that the point of ordering a flight is to experience new craft beer options. Moreover, the very nature of craft beers means that a pale ale at one brewery will not taste the same as a pale ale at another brewery. As such, do not allow your preconceived notions about a style of beer to prevent you from tasting all the beers included in your flight.
Do Enjoy Yourself! Ultimately, ordering a flight of beers should be an excellent way to try new craft beers and to expand your beer drinking palate. Make it an adventure or even a regular activity and enjoy yourself…responsibly of course.
